Antoine Albeau wraps-up the event crown and steals the 2007 world title with three back-to-back wins on the final day’s racing. Kevin Pritchard sneaks second overall after consistency rewards him throughout 15 brutal races. Bjorn Dunkerbeck powers his way into third overall. Karin Jaggi takes the critical final race win the women’s event to deny Valerie Ghibaudo the tour lead. Iballa Moreno’s return to slalom rewards her with an impressive third overall.
18-25 knots and much flatter water than previous days treated the racers to a speedy final’s day racing. The three final men’s races and two remaining women’s races. Christmas came early for Micah Buzianis’s fellow podium contenders when stage-fright gifted them valuable points as the American started prematurely in 2 out of the day’s 3 races.

Antoine Albeau steals the tour lead from Kevin Pritchard, as Micah Buzianis stays rock-solid in second.
The picturesque Bay of Roses, on Spain’s Costa Brava, gave its annual Catalonian welcome to the PWA World Tour from June 12th through 17th
The Ballena Alegre Camping resort - the site of many famous Freestyle and Super-X face-offs in the past, hosted the elite talent of the PWA’s electrifying Slalom racing format.
A favorite on tour, the entrants all stay on-site in bungalows surrounding the Race HQ, and enjoy numerous evening functions and no-wind activities in the beautiful landscape at the foot of the Pyrenean Mountains.
A Tricky Business
Race 1 This, the second racing event of 2007, spluttered into action over the first two days as fluky, conditions challenged both patience and skills of the 48-man fleet.
Sketchy light wind prevented race 1 from being completed on the first day, but day 2 and the completion of the second race set the tone for what was to come.
Initially the big story was undoubtedly how Kevin Pritchard (Starboard / MauiSails), who rocked up in Catalunya as tour leader, failed to get out of the blocks. His hopes of building on the critical event win in Korea, snapped with his mast in race 1.
Micah Buzianis, (JP / NeilPryde), who placed second in Ulsan, capitalized to win the first race, and so established a slender lead over the 2007 World Champ Antoine Albeau (Starboard / NeilPryde). PWA Chairman Jimmy Diaz made an opening bid himself with a respectable third.
Race 2 – Half Fleet
Around 20 knots of wind allowed Bjorn Dunkerbeck (T1 / North) to ruthlessly hammer home a decisive win. He headed a magnificent 24-man final of the half-fleet format, which, in good wind conditions, dazzled the crowds on the beach.
The fabled star stated he was ‘Only operating at around 90% capacity’ during the spectacular race. Pritchard slipped-up once more, this time registering a mere 7th…
Dunkerbeck’s result wasn’t enough to see him into the podium positions just yet as he’d also crashed-out in race 1. Antoine Albeau however stayed in contention after a cool and collected second.
Buzianis’ 3rd kept him in pole before an excruciating 3-day wait for wind, after Race 3 was left incomplete.
Last Chance Sunday.
Eventually adequate breeze permitted a classic final-day face-off to settle the event title. The much-welcomed wind offered a huge number of riders the chance to throw away their worst result as soon as a fourth race could be completed.
The pending 3rd race was left on hold until much stronger wind later in the day allowed clean enough air for the larger half-fleet starts.
Race 4
Albeau, celebrating his 35th birthday, immediately muscled his way into the lead with a crucial Race 4 win. The phenomenon from the Isle de Re boldly chose a massive 9.0sqm sail whilst others struggled on 7.8’s. This tenacity out-shadowed even Dunkerbeck, who opted for the same tactic, although he merely used an 8.3 to obliterate all behind him!
Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (F2 / NeilPryde) at last got some points for securing third. Earlier in the week the Argentinean had grafted through several re-starts and cancellations, which conspired to spoil any momentum he’d tried to build.
Buzianis was now on a downward spiral. Perhaps feeling too relaxed, the American rolled in 9th in Race 4, before his attention wandered and he went over early on Race 5.
Race 5
That 5th race was comprehensively taken by the vastly experienced German, Bernd Flessner (F2 / NeilPryde). Flessner, a veteran of countless Grand Slam contests, has shown he can easily compete with the younger generation of racers as Slalom’s comeback continues to grow in popularity.
Needless to say, in the absence of Buzianis through disqualification, it was Albeau who followed the German to register second, and maintain the event lead as the fourth race discard came into effect.
Dutch powerhouse Ben Van Der Steen (Exocet / Naish) clocked-in third to illustrate how improved concentration and consistency could help fulfill his vast potential this season.
Race 6
The mixed bag of results continued. Finally Pritchard restored pride and seized a vital victory in race 6. He was pursued by Frenchman Cyril Moussilmani (Fanatic / North), who was displaying a late showing of form, and there were no prizes for guessing who was in third. Yep, you guessed it. Albeau was hell-bent on maintaining his grip on the title, edging out Buzianis who could only finish in fourth.
Race 3 – Half Fleet
Gusts of nearly 30 knots really turned the heat up for the final race, the deferred half-fleet third race that was run over an elongated long-distance course.
Smoothly slipping into top gear, Cyril Moussilmani took the opposite tactic of the giants of racing, by cunningly picking the more comfortable set-up of a smaller rig to gain control in the choppy water.
He was pursued by teammate Patrik Diethelm (F2 / North) and Pritchard, who by posting this third place, edged back up to a respectable top 10 positions for the event.
Event Results
1. Antoine Albeau
2. Micah Buzianis
3. Bjorn Dunkerbeck
Albeau’s 13th place finish thankfully didn’t affect his event lead and the multiple world Champion deservedly topped the podium.
The next event in Lanzarote is bound to be intriguing. Buzianis is in the perfect position to apply pressure on Albeau. Pritchard, despite his hiccup, is still well in the frame in third after surrendering his lead here in Catalunya.
Dunkerbeck, who missed the first event in Korea, will rely on an event discard come the season’s end if he performs well during the up-coming Canarian leg. For now he must settle for 17th overall.
Overall Slalom rankings to date
1. Antoine Albeau
2. Micah Buzianis
3. Kevin Pritchard

The PWA World Cup Guincho Wave Contest 2007 – Event Summary
09.06.07 - By: Brian McDowell
It’s V for Victory as Spanish Stars Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / Simmer) and Daida Moreno (North) take the event titles after a week long waiting game.
The Podium
Daida and Victor ready to celebrate
Iberian talents Fernandez and Moreno kept celebrations on ice this week after winning the single eliminations of the Men’s and Women’s contests in tricky conditions.
Fernandez, aged just 23, displaced Kauli Seadi (Quatro / Naish) in a dramatic final against the 2005 World title holder from Brazil.
Top names fell by the wayside in this ruthless contest including reigning world champ Kevin Pritchard (Starboard / MauiSails), Aussie legend Jason Polakow (JP / NeilPryde), and long-time campaigner Nik Baker (Mistral / North).
A new era is definitely dawning as finally younger, newer talent emerged at Guincho to rock the boat, with Angulo the only one of the established old-guard left standing in the last 8.
In a red-hot ladies’ contest, Moreno defeated her long-time adversary Karin Jaggi (F2 / North) as both riders showed massive skill and composure to stay on top of the fast-rising standards in the women’s game.
The potential of some rare south wind gave an extra edge to the tension, but it never materialized and the single elimination results stood firm for the winners.
Fernandez, elated after his second career win, said ‘I’m super-stoked to win here. I didn’t expect to, and it’s a new location for me to win at. It’s special as I’ve now won one on starboard tack, and one on port tack now, which has given me more motivation for the rest of the year.
I felt good during the long wait for the rest of the week. We kicked back, relaxed, went surfing every day and generally chilled out. In fact it reminded me of waiting in Pozo last year before I took the event title there.
I would have been happy to compete as that’s what I came here to do for a full week, but it just never appeared.
My targets for the rest of the season are to finish in the top 3 now for this year. I’d like to improve and build on this performance, but that’s my goal for now’
Daida Moreno, now the 2007 tour leader, was positive too. ‘It feels really good to finish this week which was admittedly a long wait. We had two days of OK sailing at the start, and luckily a great result for me. But, I’m just stoked about starting the tour off on the right foot.
My goal for the rest of the season is simply to have fun - hopefully in some nice conditions- and to maintain a high level of performance’
The tour now rolls out of Portugal and on to Spain for The 2007 Cataluña Costa Brava PWA Slalom-42 World Cup.
Next on the wave series is Pozo in Gran Canaria in July, where this fascinating title race will be played out further.
As it stands now, Angulo leads the tour ahead of Seadi, and Fernandez’s key victory here nudges him up to third overall so far.
Now the women’s tour is out of the blocks, Daida Moreno leads ahead of Karin Jaggi in second, while Iballa Moreno, the present women’s world wave sailing champion must settle for third.
Our thanks go out to our Portuguese hosts and sponsors, Estoril Coast Tourism and Overpower for once more laying-on a spectacular event, and for their world-renowned hospitality.

The first racing event of the 2007 PWA World Tour went off this week with six solid rounds of action in challenging conditions, making for a great test of the riders skills and equipment.
MauiSails' team rider, Kevin Pritchard US-3, generally showed the fleet his back to take the number one spot on this year's Race discipline ranking list. Micah Buzianis USA-34 and Antoine Albeau F-192 finished second and third respectively.
Kevin said, "I'm really happy to win this event. It's a great start to the year, and shows how much we have been working in the right direction with my equipment. My Starboard 122 was working really good, and the TR-3s really put on a good show with some amazing acceleration. I noticed a big difference in my performance from last year in all points of my sailing. I had a lot better speed this year going down the first reach, as well as some amazing power out of the turns. The TR-3 feels so good in your hands and allows you to focus on the water conditions and the racing rather than thinking about how to control your sail.
I'am very stoked to win. It feels amazing to have all the hard work come together and to be able to come away with a victory! Thanks to all my sponsors: Starboard, MauiSails, 360 Board Gear, Camaro, Dakine, Debiochet, and Islandstylevacations.com for supporting me!".
Kevin will now be returning to Hawaii to train for his next event and continue his effort to be the number one ranked sailor in the race and wave disciplines of the PWA.
The next stop on the PWA World Tour will be in Portugal, where last
year Pritchard won the first wave event of the season.

The PWA proudly confirms that the 2007 Slalom 42 tour will open with another brand new and exciting tour stop in Ulsan, South Korea.
With a new title race open, and glory at stake, this exciting new location and its attractive €45K prize purse is guaranteed to attract the big hitters of the PWA’s exclusive Slalom 42 discipline.
Get ready to see the likes of 2006 World Champion Antoine Albeau (F-192 Starboard / NeilPryde), last year’s gutsy runner up Micah Buzianis (USA-34 JP / NeilPryde), racing stalwart Kevin Pritchard (USA-3 Starboard / MauiSails), world speed record holder Finian Maynard (KV-11 F2 / NeilPryde) and many many more, jostle for position in the toughest racing fleet on earth.

Current PWA world wave champ Kevin Pritchard (Starboard / MauiSails) missed out on the top spot at the Laureus Sports awards, and there was no shame in being runner up to surfing legend Kelly Slater who took the trophy for world action sports personality of the year.
Da Blog
Kev was also in prestigious company from other action sports athletes to mainstream players, and got to meet most of them through another huge name – Robby Naish! We’re proud he represented our sport so well and that his achievements were seen by the crème de la crème of the sporting world. Congratulations Kevin.
The whole experience was obviously a big deal for the all-rounder, and you can find out all about it at Kevin’s personal Blog site, which is growing in popularity daily. We asked him a couple of questions about the Blog and why you should visit it.
What’s the Blogs purpose? No real purpose. I wanted to keep some notes for myself and figured why not put it on a Blog. People seem to really like it and I always enjoy hearing from people who read it.
Who’s it aimed at? It is aimed at anyone who is interested in knowing the life of a pro windsurfer, and to hear about events like the Laureus awards.
Why a Blog and not a regular website? I have a small website that I have for sending potential sponsors to here, but other than that I don’t really think there is a need for a website. I think with the Blog people are much more into reading live news than just going to a site and nothing new to see. With the Blog you open it up read the first few lines and if it doesn't interest you to click away, otherwise you stay there and keep reading...
How much of a habit has it become to maintain it like a kind of diary? Yah I try and do it everyday more for myself than for anything else.
What benefit will readers get from checking it regularly or subscribing to a feed? Well you get up to date Maui reports, I also usually state my mind in a unedited way that might not always be politically correct where as when I am doing interviews and things like that I might not. It also kinda gives a backstage type of view on tour life and there’s some fun stuff; for example I almost got arrested for having a beer in a Hawaii State Park the other day so I wrote about that. It is something that is mellow and kinda the real deal if you know what I mean.

Congratulations to Kevin Pritchard who won the PWA World Wave Title making it his 7th World Title.Kevin said "I'm super stoked to win the most sought after title in the windsurfing world."
The PWA Aloha Classic presented by JP Australia concluded Saturday at Hookipa Beach Park, known and respected worldwide for its strong trade winds and perfect windsurfing waves. This event marks the conclusion of a full year of PWA sponsored events worldwide, where world famous top athletes compete for points in search of the world champion crown.
Heading into the final event of the season, Kevin Pritchard was in the lead with 2005 World Champion, Kauli Saudi in second position right on his heels, and Josh Angulo in third.
Event coordinators patiently waited out the calm winds for acceptable conditions to run the event and were rewarded on the last day with strong winds and mast high waves. Competition among the top athletes was fierce but in the end it was Haiku's own Kevin Pritchard who sailed his way to third place in the Aloha Classic with 2005 Aloha Classic winner, Kauli Seadi, finishing in seventh place overall, crowning Kevin Pritchard the 2006 PWA Wave World Champion.
With this Wave Title Kevin no doubt secures his place in windsurfing's history as one of the very best all-round windsurfers we have seen over the past few decades. Kevin sailed consistent the whole year and once again put in another solid performance here at Hookipa.
Kevin commented : "To win the PWA Wave World Title has been one of my goals over the past few years and now I made it again for the second time in my career. I also finished 2nd in the Super X discipline and 3rd in racing so it has been a great year for me. I'm super stoked to win the most sought after title in the windsurfing world. I would like to thank everyone involved that has helped me achieve my goal, my family, my friends, and my sponsors, Starboard, Maui Sails, Camaro, 360 Board Gear, Kaenon Polarized, Deboichet and Island Style Vacations.com. I am super happy to win this and it means a lot to me to come out on top!"
